We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice, and we work proactively to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our gardening and grounds maintenance activities.

This policy sets out our health and safety objectives, the allocation of responsibilities, and the arrangements we have in place to manage risk across our gardening services.

Our Health and Safety Objectives

We aim to achieve high standards of health and safety by identifying and controlling hazards associated with gardening, landscaping and general outdoor work. Our main objectives are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, protect the public and clients during our operations, and continually improve our safety performance through training, supervision and regular review.

All members of our team are expected to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their work, and to cooperate with management in implementing this policy.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Hatch End holds overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes ensuring that suitable arrangements, systems and resources are in place to manage risks effectively throughout our service area.

Management duties include planning work with health and safety as a priority, carrying out and reviewing risk assessments for gardening tasks, supplying and maintaining safe tools, machinery and equipment, providing appropriate personal protective equipment, ensuring that staff receive adequate information, instruction, supervision and training, and investigating accidents, incidents and near misses to prevent recurrence.

Employee Responsibilities

Our safe systems of work cover, as a minimum, the use of powered tools and machinery such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and blowers, manual handling of soil, plants, waste, tools and materials, working at height for hedge cutting, pruning and access to raised beds, use and storage of fuels, oils and other substances, and traffic management where work is close to roads, driveways or shared access routes.

Tools, Machinery and Equipment Safety
